Why did the Americans select the constitutional order they did in 1787-1789, and why did they reject a more democratic and confederal form not more than a decade old? In 1787, twenty-nine delegates convened in Philadelphia to tweak the Articles of Confederation. Some delegates, however, arrived with the intention of creating a completely new constitution. James Madison proposed the Virginia Plan, a plan which advocated a balanced, three-branch method of government with a bicameral, or two-house, Congress. In contrast, William Paterson submitted the New Jersey Plan which merely amended the Articles by giving the federal government more power. He led armed bands of these men against the courts of western Massachusetts in an effort to force a closure of the court system (Text, 110). The rebellion was defeated by January of the following year but it was clear that change was needed. By the time that Shay’s Rebellion occurred, the Nationalists ad been trying to amend the Articles of Confederation for several years. Unfortunately, doing so required a unanimous vote among the states and the Confederation Congress could not leverage such unanimity. In September of 1786, representatives from the five states bordering the Chesapeake Bay convened in Annapolis, Maryland, for the supposed purpose of discussing trade issues. â€Å"The Nationalists among the Annapolis Convention delegates proceeded to plant the seed of a peaceful counterrevolution against the Confederation Congress† (Text, 109). She doesnt belong there, and the kids who do are probably wishing they could go home for lunch. In its larger truth, A Rice Sandwich reflects back into Esperanzas Mango Street situation. She wants a real house all to herself, clean like paper before the poem. But Esperanza would probably be very lonely in such a house, and suddenly it would not be quite what she thought. She wants to escape from Mango Street, but the last bit is about her coming back. Why? Because she cannot forget where she came from, and leaving is only coming back. .

He may have been a cobbler or someone who repaired shoes. To further confuse the issue, some occupational terms had multiple meanings. Someone who worked as a chandler could be someone who made or sold tallow or wax candles, or soap, or they might be  a retail dealer  in provisions and supplies or equipment of a specified kind. Ships chandlers, for example, specialized in supplies  or equipment for ships, known as ships stores. Another reason you may not recognize a particular occupation is that abbreviations are and were commonly used in many records and documents. City directories, for example, often abbreviated occupations of city residents in an effort to save space and cut publication costs. A guide to the abbreviations can generally be found among the first few pages of the directory. It is also common to find certain longer occupational names abbreviated in census records, due to limited space on the census form. The instructions to enumerators for the U.S. federal census often provided specific instructions as to if or how occupations should be abbreviated.
